A great trek in a UNESO beech forest with a committed and knowledgeable guide. Good communication, logistics and setup. The pleasure was not only in the hike, but the enriched experience of being in nature with a passionate, well-informed guide who brought the forest, and its wildlife alive for me. Sal pointed out so many things I would have missed, and just stopping and hearing the woodpecker, or watching the peregrine falcon was awesome.

A mindful trekking experience! Trekking with Sal is more than just a chance to escape from the routine of the city life. It's a chance to feel closer to the nature while becoming more aware of the cultural and historical face of Rome and other cities around Italy. Sal is an experienced and well prepared guide that makes you perceive, feel and see details that you wouldn't if you were on your own. Well thought and carefully prepared treks that can be adapted to all levels and types of groups.

Sal was a fantastic guide! Right from the beginning he was helpful with train times, platforms and extra information. He knew a lot, cares a lot, and was a kind, helpful and a charismatic tour guide. I really suggest going on a trip with him. Everyone on our trip came alone, and left as friends. I will be back very soon.

Hiking with Sal was such a lovely way to spend a Saturday! Not only was the hike beautiful and certainly fit for all levels, it was also informative as Sal was a fountain of knowledge and we all learnt so much. The group was so friendly and I’m sure we will all keep in touch. I can’t recommend this enough! Thanks, Sal!

I took one of the urban+nature walk options, Parco degli Acquedotti, which ended up being slightly over 3.5 hours (!!!). The length of the walk is adjustable, but frankly it felt much less anyway as the walk was enjoyable. Though it was a holiday, and I was the only person that had booked, Sal still cheerfully and knowledgably guided me along a part of Rome I had never seen. There is a particular segment that just takes your breath away, where the broken curved line of Aqua Claudia stretches out to what it seems like the green horizon. Sal knew all the right places - spots that are open to the public, but I wouldn't have known to go by myself. I'd actually like to sign up for another tour route in the future just to see the 'old man's beard' lichen Sal was describing!

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about guided hiking near Rome and other regions of Italy answered:

What kind of hikes do you offer?

During the week, we focus on Urban hikes and hikes that are accessible by train.

Urban hikes explore natural parks in Rome, including the Aqueducts Park, but also great biospheres like the Caffarella Park, the Rivers and more, far away from the big tourist crowds.

On weekends we focus on the outdoors, and you can see our updated program on our calendar.

There is a big range of experiences, from forests, to mountains, from simple loops to longer pilgrimages.

Are trails accessible by train?

We design and plan as many hikes as possible so that they start and end near public transport, typically the subway station or near a train station.

All Urban hikes are accessible by subway stations or local trains.

Many outdoor destinations near Rome are accessible by train, too – if so it is specified within the description.

Some remote experiences however are only accessible by car. If so, this is specified on the description page of the experience. Note that transport is not included, however, we encourage participants to use carpooling where possible. Also you might find this post useful that lays out some options if you do not own a ar.

I'd like to join but I don't have a car. What should I do?

You don’t need a car to join our Urban hikes and hikes that are accessible by train.

For our experiences that require transport, it’s good to know that we facilitate car pooling if possible. However, we recommend also checking out this post for options for those that do not own a car.

Why are certain events not showing on the booking calendar?

The hiking calendar shows availability for our regular hikes (urban hikes), which run Monday – Thursday, and a few other hiking options that are well-connected by train and run all year round.

We also have new, unique hiking experiences every month which you can see on our continously updated calendar, and additional ones which may only be bookable by inquiring directly.

However, if you have a group or would like to hike on a different day than those suggested on my calendar, feel free to get in touch for a tailor-made experience.

Do you offer student discounts?

For some experience, we do offer student discounts – simply get in touch to learn more.

I'm visiting Rome in a specific period. Do you have hikes on?

There are always hikes on! 😊

Urban hikes typically run Monday – Thursday.

For more “outdoorsy” adventures, check out our weekend calendar here.

If you don’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to get in touch!

Can I bring my kids?

All Urban hikes are suited for kids. Typically they are suited for children 14 years+.

In some circumstances, e.g. if your children are used to walking/hiking for many kilometers/miles, younger kids may be able to join.

Simply get in touch and we’ll assess if the trail you’re interested in is suited for your kids.

Can I bring my dog?

We love dogs, and often you can bring your dog for private hikes, but for public group hikes, we ask you to leave your dog at home for two reasons:

1. Some experiences could be dangerous for  your dog or the flora/fauna of protected areas (e.g. if we go into areas with wildlife such as wolves / bears)

2. Some of the other participants might be afraid of dogs

Simply get in touch and we’ll assess if the experience and your dog go well together

What happens if it rains?

Generally, we go hiking also when it rains (with light rain up to 1mm/h – 2mm/h).

Should the rain be stronger than predicted while we’re already on the trail, or should weather conditions change suddenly, we have all the tools, experience, and also alternative routes at our disposal to keep the experience going while keeping everyone safe.

Under some circumstances, however, we might have to cancel the experience altogether.

In that unlikely case, you will receive a notification via email and Whatsapp or any other platform from where you booked ahead of time, together with a list of options you have.

Safety always comes first.

If a rain warning is issued by the Civil Protection Department (code red), the experience will be canceled. In that case, you can choose a refund, or switch to another experience on a different day.

Depending on the weather forecast we might be able to offer an alternative hike in a different part of the region, or in a different region altogether.

Hikes near rivers might be canceled if the river banks are flooded due to prolonged rain on the days before. Also here, you get a refund, no questions asked, or can choose to join another experience on a different day.

Hikes in gorges might be canceled even on sunny days. This can happen if our safety assessment shows that there was rain in other regions upstream that might increase the risk of flash floods in the valley.

Even if there are no official warning issued by a government agency, we might assess that the weather conditions are too dangerous for a specific hike (e.g. only light rain, but all on slippery limestone in the mountains). In that case, we might decide to cancel the experience.

In all of the cases mentined above, you will receive a full refund, or can choose to join us for another hike on another day!
